Infection is the most feared complications after total joint replacement surgery. However, risk of infection is less than 1 %. Prophylactic antibiotics are used routinely to prevent infections.
During the first few months after hip replacements, certain precautions will be required prevent dislocations.
The best way to prevent blood clot is to start range of motion exercises and walking as soon as possible. In addition, most patients are given Aspirin to minimize the risk of developing blood clots. Some high risk patients may require more potent blood thinners for 2 weeks after operation.
